To deal with the increasing traffic a new bridge will be built across the river Waal in Nijmegen, creating an island in the middle of the city. This means that the bridge can become more than a connection between two banks; the island halfway offers an extra destination. The traffic across the river will be separated: a fast lane for cars and a quiet lane for cyclists and pedestrians which follows the main construction. A forest of columns creates a special residential space underneath the bridge.
